June 18, 2009'Donnie Darko 3'Wait, wait, wait... when was the second Donnie Darko? Fox is planning a third installment for the cult classic Donnie Darko. This struck me as a surprise, because I was completely unaware of the second Donnie Darko. Research shows (thanks IMDB!) that the sequel was called S. Darko and it apparently came out this year. The sequel is supposedly awful and, honestly, the synopsis is just confusing. But, the sequel had a different director. *Fun Fact* Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick plays bad boy Randy and is joined in the cast by Twilight's Jackson Rathbone. It's rumored that the original director is on board for the third installment. But is this a good thing? His post-Darko career hasn't exactly been illuminating. He has only directed two movies since the 2001 indie film and neither movie has gathered much attention. So why bother with another sequel? It's not like Donnie Darko was a major box office smash...

My Respect for Pete Wentz Just Flew the CoopPete Wentz's label Decaydance Records is home to some really awesome bands (think Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes, Panic! At the Disco, Hey Monday and many more). Decaydance's success is largely due to the dedication and good taste of Pete and his cohorts. So what was he thinking when he signed this band?

How Bad Can BrokenCyde Be?Last week Emily brought us the 'Why Some Bands Suck More Than Others' post, which led to a very long, very intense, very heated discussion about BrokenCyde. Having never heard of this band (I'd never even heard of this so-called CrunkCore/EmoCrunk genre), I decided to do some digging. And what better research than reviewing BrokenCyde's new album, I'm Not a Fan but the Kids Like It? How bad can this really be?

Pirates Of The Carrbean 1, 2 and 3 were just not enough, not even for Depp. Who could ask for more? Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer are milking the cash now for all it's worth... and I'm ok with it.

Phineas And Ferb: Ashley Tisdale And Mitchel Musso = A Cartoon That RocksIs Disney's Phineas and Ferb just another kids' cartoon show? Ashley Tisdale, Mitchel Musso, and two Emmy nominations might beg to differ. For those of you who don't know, P&F is an animated series about two step-brothers whose imaginations lead them to an abundance of hijinks during their summer vacation — though they never escape the notice of their nosy sister Candace (voiced by the Tiz. Seriously, how many jobs does this girl have? Does she sleep?). With an A+ cast, Disney hit the jackpot with P&F

June 11, 2009Paul McCartney is Such a GirlPlease excuse the phrasing of the title, but SERIOUSLY. Spin Magazine just came out with a tiny article about Paul McCartney and his views on collaborations. The magazine lists MGMT and Bob Dylan as potential collaboration cohorts. About collaborating with MGMT, Paul said, "We need to talk about it. I can't call them." Seriously? Too much of a big shot? Too much of a wuss? Spin tries to back him up by saying, "Basically he's old fashioned and into the idea of potential collaborators making the first move to get the ball rolling." So, basically, he's the artist and the other people are the collaborators... As in the song would be "Whatever" by Paul McCartney ft. MGMT/Bob Dylan/anyone. And it couldn't be MGMT/Bob Dylan/anyone ft. Paul McCartney? I guess I really just don't get it. Later in the article he goes on to say that he can't call Bob Dylan and Bob Dylan has to call him. Seriously, how often do you see these people? I assume it's not, like, every week that McCartney sees Dylan. It's not like he can be like, 'hey Bob, how come you never call me?' Anyway, whenever I hear about Paul McCartney from now on I'll be thinking about when I was in junior high school and my girly-girl friends would say things like, 'omg so-and-so's soo cute, but I can't talk to him.' You get the point. Paul McCartney needs to man up if he's gonna get this done.

June 10, 2009Why Is This Necessary: Spiderman the MusicalAfter perusing the usual news sites, I came upon one particular article with some distressing news. It's right here. Since when have Bono and the Edge been into musicals? Not that there's anything wrong with it. Personally, I love musicals. But, Broadway just isn't their niche. This isn't news to me. It was reported a while ago, but now they're opening up discussion about it, because of its impending release date (February 18, 2010). There are, however, a few major issues that distress me most. If Bono and the Edge want to throw their towels into the ring, then ok, I have enough confidence in them to write good songs ("Get on Your Boots" is an exception). But don't they know that Broadway is going under? They're looking to take a major loss. If the musical isn't impeccable, it won't be seen. People who would see it solely because it's a Spiderman musical will be automatically ruled out by the current state of the economy. In the movies and comic books, Spiderman manages to keep his dignity while still running around in a tight jumpsuit. Add singing and dancing to the bit, and how will Spiderman retain the image he's built for years and years? (Confession: his image is hyper-masculine and dictated by society's standards of male behavior.) I'm just saying, are there no original ideas anymore?

The Used, A7X, Stardeath and More Go Crazy For CoversFrom the dawn of music, covers have always been used to pay tribute to the greatest artists. But recording a song made famous by another artist is a delicate matter, and it can either be really awesome or really awful (311's cover of The Cure's "Love Song" anybody?). The Used has recently taken on Talking Heads, and more bands are now jumping on the bandwagon. Guess who's getting the cover treatment?

Love, She Wrote's Video "Bling Bling Baby"That's right, Love, She Wrote (touring this summer), just released the video for "Bling Bling Baby." My recommendation is to turn the volume all the way up, because this band rocks. Joey C.'s smooth vocals over the loud emo-pop create a dynamic sound not unlike Fall Out Boy (not too much alike though). See what you think

Escape the Fate's "10 Miles Wide" Video Is Just What You ExpectEscape the Fate's new video for "10 Miles Wide" just premiered, and it's everything that can be expected from them. The video is mediocre and unoriginal. Big-breasted, mostly blonde women in tight stewardess outfits fight for the attention of the band members by flipping their hair, grinding up against them, and overall being temptresses (to put it in a nice way). Would you fly with them?

Katy Perry Fights Back, Clams Up and Moves ForwardNot too long ago, Beth Ditto, vocalist for The Gossip, was quoted in Attitude magazine as saying, "I hate Katy Perry! She's offensive to gay culture" and said that her hit song, "I Kissed a Girl," was a, "boner dyke anthem for straight girls who like to turn guys on by making out or, like, faking gay." Ditto went so fars as to try and incite a band feud. For a while the "Waking Up in Vegas" songstress remained mum on the issue, but now she has words for Ditto. See what the singer has to say

Want More Vampires? If you've finished reading the Twilight series, watching the movies, and watching True Blood, but still want more, then do I have some good news for you! Think the vampire hype is dying down? Not a chance. Director of The Hobbit, Guillermo Del Toro, has been fascinated by dark magic and the occult since he was a little boy. Now, the I Am Legend director has a book out called The Strain, which hit stores at the beginning of June. The story is about a vampiric disease, which affects New York City, while doctors and scientists from the Center for Disease Control research a cure before it's too later for the entire planet. Ok, so it's not a vampire love story... but don't fret, because this won't be Del Toro's only release. There is already a plan for two more books and considering that the man is obsessed with the blood suckers, it will only be a matter of time before there's more.

Like 90's Alt Rock? So Does Four Year StrongFour Year Strong is putting out their second album for I Surrender/Decaydence records. It's the followup album to 2007's Rise or Die Trying, but this time they're taking a different route. Same great sound, new approach. Explains It All is set to be released July 21, 2009 and is purely made up of 90's alt-rock covers. Piqued your curiousity yet? I hope so, because they already released the discography.
These songs are so recognizeable now so Four Year Strong had really better put their own spin on them. This will either be awesome or awful.

June 2, 2009Los Angeles Legends X's Sad NewsThe frontwoman of great 80's punk band X has some terribly sad news for all of us today.
Exene Cervenka has apparently not been feeling well for months and recent medical testing has shown that she has Multiple Sclerosis. For those of you who don't know what MS is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the nervous system. The ability of the nerve cells in the brain to communicate with the nerve cells in the spinal cord. MS has no known cure and some treatments have adverse effects in patients. There are therapies, however, and "alternative treatments."
This news comes right in the middle of their "TRL" tour (TRL as in you get to vote for the songs, has nothing to do with MTV). The tour has been running since April and is due to run through the end of July. There is no news as of yet whether any of the dates are going to be cancelled. The entire statement can be read here.

Katy Perry Feels Backlash From Angry Beth DittoSinger for The Gossip, Beth Ditto, is angry at Katy Perry for her single "I Kissed A Girl." Ditto, raised in Arkansas, has been in numerous magazines talking about when she came out to her parents and how she dealt with being gay in a small southern town. The reason she's angry? In Attitude Magazine, Ditto calls Perry's hit song a "boner dyke anthem for straight girls who like to turn on guys who like making out or, like, faking gay." Ditto says later in the interview that Katy Perry is, "offensive to gay culture, I'm so offended. She's riding on the backs of our culture without having to pay any dues and not being actually lesbian or anything at all." The Gossip is a punk/dance band, known for being outspoken and putting on killer stage shows. Currently on a huge festival kick over in Europe for the summer, the new album Music For Men is due out June 22nd (but watch the infomercial). Personally, Ditto wins this one for style, outspokenness, singing voice, and overall being right.

June 1, 2009Remember Harvey Danger Band?90's alt-rockers and one-hit wonders Harvey Danger broke up today. So that means they were still together prior to today? There is a lengthy entry on their website (they had a website?) detailing their breakup. *cue worlds smallest violin* The band apparently lasted 15 years and put out 3 albums, which is 2.9 more than anyone cared about. The group is most famous for their single "Flagpole Sitta" from their album Where Have all the Merrymakers Gone? in 1998. While I make fun of the band for failing to replicate the success of "Flagpole Sitta" and make the band last well past its expiration date, Harvey Danger Band will always live on fondly in my heart. The farewell letter is heartfelt and profoundly thanks all of their fans.

Snuggle Up with Weezer! We've all seen the commercial. We all think it's incredibly corny and all secretly want one. You know what I'm talking about... the Snuggie. The blanket you can wear. It's pretty much identical to a robe worn backwards and makes you look like a monk from some strange order when worn outside at sporting events. And yet they look so inviting and functional (you can answer the phone in one, shown in the commercial). So how do you get away with wearing a Snuggie without your entire social life going down the tubes? Fear not, the Wuggie is due out later this year. The Wuggie combines all of the comfort of the Snuggie with the added cool-factor of Weezer. The "Pork and Beans" band has been spotted in recent pictures wearing red and leopard-printed Snuggies on stage. While Weezer has a page Although there are many fashion cues that I wouldn't take from Weezer (ie Rivers Cuomo's cowboy hat and facial hair) the Wuggie is just too good to pass up.
